Gavett " G "
GUITAR
Born in New Orleans to two musically gifted parents, Groovin G (Gavett) was destined for a life in music. Her father, a touring jazz bassist, and her mother, a classical prodigy turned jazz pianist, set the stage for her earliest musical training. At just six years old she began classical piano, later experimenting with drums before finding her true voice on the guitar at thirteen. Self-taught and relentless, she spent countless hours absorbing R&B, funk, and smooth jazz directly from radio and records.
Over a 50-year career, Groovin G has developed a distinctive style rooted in the grooves of the Isley Brothers, Earth, Wind & Fire, Maze, Chaka Khan, and Stevie Wonder, blended with the finesse of her guitar heroes like Nile Rodgers, George Benson, and Norman Brown. What makes her stand out is not only her mastery of rhythm guitar but also her presence as a 63-year-old white female performing soul, funk, and jazz inside an all-Black, all-female ensemble. Her message is simple and powerful: “It’s never too late to do your dream job.”
